Top 5 Appliance Tips for Making Your Major Home Appliances Last Longer

Appliance Tips from appliance repair Lancaster, CA
Top 5 Appliance Tips from Bob (The Appliance Guy)

The five most important household appliances in everyone’s home would have to be the washing machine, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher and oven/range. I’ve been an appliance technician for over 30 years and after careful consideration, I’ve come up with what I think are the #1 tips for making each of these appliances last longer. If you follow each of these tips, you will make fewer calls to your appliance repair service & you’ll be able to keep these appliances around for a while.

Washing Machine

NEVER OVERLOAD YOUR WASHER! This is the #1 Appliance Tip of all time and the reason I put it first. If you want your washing machine to last a long time, don’t try to get your laundry done so quickly. Heavy loads & off-balanced loads will put a strain on the moving parts of your machine & wear them out. Over-loading & off-balanced loads DESTROY your machine! Don’t be in such a hurry. Dryer

KEEP YOUR DRYER AND VENT LINE CLEAR OF LINT! Cleaning the lint screen on your dryer before every load should be a habit but that’s not enough. Lint builds up in your dryer and vent line over time. When your vent line starts to get restricted, more lint backs up into your dryer which creates a possible dryer fire. The inside of your dryer & vent line need to be vacuumed out periodically.

Refrigerator

KEEP YOUR CONDENSER CLEAN! The condenser is what keeps your compressor from overheating. Most refrigerators have a forced-air condenser. A fan motor moves air across the condenser which cools your compressor. Lint and pet hair gets sucked into the condenser and when it builds up & restricts the air flow, your compressor overheats. You DON’T want your compressor to overheat! Clean your condenser regularly!

Dishwasher

RINSE THE FOOD OFF YOUR DISHES! Would you like your dishes to come out clean and your dishwasher to last longer? Then rinse your dishes before loading them into the dishwasher. Even though you may have seen commercials that say you can be lazy & leave the food on your dishes, I’m telling you “It Doesn’t Work”! The food has to go somewhere and usually it gets clogged up in the pump & spray arms and then you’ll have to call someone like me. More Dishwasher Tips

Oven/Range

DON'T USE THE SELF-CLEAN FEATURE! If your oven or range has the self-cleaning feature, DON’T USE IT! There are 2 good reasons for this. First, it’s bad for your health. The fumes that emit from the oven during the self-clean cycle are toxic. The 2nd reason is, because the oven reaches such high temperatures during self-clean, the extreme heat causes parts to fail. We get a large percentage of oven calls right after someone has used the self-clean feature on their oven. If you just keep your spills wiped up when they happen, you won’t need to harm your family & your oven with self-clean.                             toxic- Self-Cleaning Ovens - Toxic For Humans or only Birds?

  1. We just discussed this last night at dinner. Interestingly enough appliances last a long time, so from a value perspective, they are a super low cost per use item. Taking care of them makes for an even better investment.

Here in the desert area of Lancaster/Palmdale we used to worry about the gaskets and seals going bad. But we have not had that problem in many years. Probably not a good thing for the repair business, but a good thing for us homeowners.

  2. I agree Dr. Frye! It's much better to take care of the appliances you have rather than buying new. Another good appliance tip is: When you hear an abnormal noise from one of your household appliances, don't wait till it gets worse before you have it looked at! Waiting may cause unnecessary damage to your appliance and extra expense you could have avoided by calling an honest appliance repair company. I just happen to know one in the Lancaster/Palmdale, CA area if you ever need one Dr. Frye!! :)

  5. A good percentage of our oven repair calls come from people that have used the self cleaning feature on their ovens. I like to call it the self destruct feature.

  6. You can try to fix your appliances yourself but they can be tricky, and you might cause more damage. Sometimes its better to hire an appliance repair professional to do the job. They have years of experience.

    1. I disagree with you J Mark. A lot has changed in the appliance industry. In most cases, the appliance you are throwing away (just because it costs half the price of a new one) is a better machine than the new one you'll replace it with. For example, if your 10 year old Kenmore washer needs a transmission and a motor coupler, should you throw it away and buy a new one because it costs 280.00 to repair it? If you choose to buy a new one in this case, you would be making a mistake. The 10 year old Kenmore washer was made by Whirlpool when Whirlpool was still making quality machines. Whirlpool no longer makes that style machine and the new Kenmore (top-load) washers are made by LG. The new Whirlpool (top-load) washers are a piece of junk. Don't listen to people that have this silly formula that if an appliance repair is half the price of a new one, you should always choose to buy a new one. It's not that cut & dry. If someone offered me a choice of a 10 year old Kenmore (top-load)washer or a brand new Kenmore (top-load) washer for free, I would choose the 10 year old Kenmore over the new one every time. I would want the better machine. Things are not the same as they used to be. Before you throw out an appliance, talk to an honest & knowledgeable appliance technician that doesn't sell new appliances. Get his opinion first.

  19. I've heard of a ton of different tips to keep your major appliances functioning properly. I've never heard of making sure your compressor is clean in the fridge. That actually makes a ton of sense. If you're going to spend money on major appliances, you'd do well to learn how to maintain them.

  23. Bob, I agree that keeping your dryer clear of lint can really help out. I knew that lint builds up in your dryer and vent line over time. However, I didn't know that it was smart to vacuum out the inside. http://www.housecallsappliancerepair.com/appliance-services.html

  24. I really like your suggestion to rinse the food off your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. My husband and I have been having a problem with our dishwasher and we were told that it would clean better if we didn't rinse our dishes. It seems like it would be much better from your dishwasher if you weren't filling it up with all your food scraps. http://quality-appliance.com

  25. Great article. I'm sure this is a question everybody asks at least a few times in their life. It seems like its really important to just do some research on your current models and costs. It could help to determine if you want to repair the appliance.

  26. In regards to keeping your compressor clean in your fridge, where would you find that? Our freezer/fridge combination has been making some rattling noises recently that make me wonder if something is caught somewhere. 32. Wow, I didn't know that the oven's self-clean feature could actually damage it, it makes you wonder why something like that is included in the first place. I really like these tips because, while appliances repairs will always be needed eventually, these are great to keep them healthy for as long as possible. I'll definitely have to remember to clean out the condenser in my fridge, it is something you never really think about so it always escapes my mind.
