Appliance Repair or Replace?

Appliance Repair or Appliance Replace Lancaster, CA
It's a good question? Your appliance has decided to stop working correctly and you're not sure what to do. Repair or Replace? You don't want to waste money on an appliance repair service call charge if you don't need to but you also don't want to buy a brand new washer or dryer or refrigerator or dishwasher or any major household appliance if yours can be fixed for a reasonable price. It's a question asked by thousands of people every day.

I've been an appliance repair technician, in the Palmdale & Lancaster, California area, for over 30 years now and I've seen a lot of changes in the industry. Let me share with you what I believe you should do. These are my honest opinions of what I think is best for you. Please don't think I'm giving this advice because it benefits me. I built my business by always doing what's best for the customer. I have always believed that if you're honest and do the right thing, you'll be successful and everything else will just fall into place.  It's called Karma.

Reasons to decide to buy a new appliance before calling an Appliance Repair Service

1.  Your appliance is very old (over 35), or rusted out, or so ugly that all your friends & family make fun of you for still having it when they come over.

2.  You have so much money, that you don't mind wasting it on a cheaply made new appliance before seeing what's wrong with yours.  You'll feel better about having a pretty new appliance to show your friends even if it's poorly made and not as good as the one you're throwing away.

3.  You don't have this appliance.  Since you don't have one to fix, there's no need to call an appliance repair service to fix it.  They can't fix what you don't have.  This would be a good reason to buy a new appliance. (however, a good used appliance might be a better option)

That's It!  There are only 3 reasons to go right out and buy a new appliance rather than have an honest appliance repair service come out to your home to diagnose the problem with your appliance and tell you what it would take to fix it.
Please note that I did say honest appliance repair service.  I'm sure many of you have had a bad experience with a dis-honest service company and you’re afraid you're just going to get ripped-off again so why not just go out and buy a new one?  Believe me, I know there are many dis-honest companies out there but there are also a few honest appliance repair companies.  So now you're asking, "But Bob, How can I tell the difference?"  Funny you should ask.  I wrote an article on the wikiHow Site entitled "How To Choose The Right Appliance Repair Service In Your Area".  Just click on that link and you'll know how to find the diamond in the rough.

Reasons to decide to repair the appliance you already have

1.  It is a better built appliance than most (if not all) of the new appliances for sale.
2.  The cost to repair it is less than the cost of a new one.
3.  Reasons 1 & 2 are only valid if you call an honest appliance repair service.
So I guess you can tell how I feel about the new appliances.  When I got into this business back in 1980, quality meant something to manufactures.  Appliances were made to last and they were made simple.  It has gradually got worse & worse as time has moved on.  I'm shocked at what they are putting out there now.  One company that I have believed in and recommended for 30 years, I can no longer recommend when I'm asked what refrigerator should I buy?  (Technicians reading this that have been in the business over 10 years know exactly what company I'm talking about).
That well-know company is now putting out crappy refrigerators and the compressors are failing in less than 2 years in many cases.  I know you're thinking, "But Bob, why are you complaining?  Doesn't that give your business more work?  Yes it does but it's still wrong!! These companies know how to make appliances that will last but they won't do it because of GREED!!  I know there are a lot of technicians out there that agree with me.  Especially if they've been in the business as long as I have.  So, to sum all of this up:
Have your appliance checked out by an honest appliance repair service company before deciding to buy a new one.  If after you've discussed it with the technician, you decide to buy new, ask him what brand he would buy if he had to buy that appliance for his family today.
Here's an example of what I would tell my customer if they needed to buy a new refrigerator.
Customer:  Bob, I need to buy a new refrigerator, what brand should I buy?
Me:(but you can call me Bob):  The refrigerator brand I've been recommending for many years, I can no longer recommend.  The brand I'm going to recommend to you is General Electric and this is why :( for the technicians who are disagreeing with me right now) I rarely see a GE compressor fail.  GE has other issues that happen but they are not as serious or expensive as when a compressor fails.  It's better having a refrigerator with a quality compressor more than anything else. (I just hope GE is still making the new refrigerators this year with quality compressors or I'm going to look bad here)

Note:  I just said GE Refrigerators.  Please don't go out and buy a GE washer & dryer.  They're junk!  (That’s my opinion GE.  I just praised your refrigerator so don't sue me for my opinion on your washer & dryer.  Just start making better ones!!)
What's Your Opinion?  I welcome any and all comments.  If you're a technician, let me know if you agree with me or if you're wrong.  Just kidding!  I'm sure not all technicians are going to agree with me.  Only the smart ones!  Just kidding again! ......Or Am I ?

  1. I have an 8 year old Kenmore gas dryer that won't start. My wife wants to go buy a new dryer but this one still looks new. I made sure there was power to the outlet but when I push the start button nothing happens. No noise at all. Do you think Kenmore makes a good dryer? What do you think it could be and how much could it cost me? I need to do something soon. Any info you could give would be appreciated. Look forward to your response.

    1. Hello Glen, I hope I'm getting back to you in time. First, go to your dryer, open the door, and take a look at the Model #. The first 3 numbers of your model # are probably 110. That means your dryer was made by Whirlpool. Kenmore is the name Sears puts on their appliances made by other companies. So to answer your first question, Yes I think your 8 year old Whirlpool dryer is a GOOD dryer. While, you're there looking at the model #, look to see if the door switch lever is still there and working properly. When you close your dryer door, it pushes the lever to the door switch closed. You should be able to see the lever, push it with your finger, and hear a click, if it's working correctly. Make sure you hear the click of the switch when you close the dryer door. If that door switch isn't working, nothing will happen when you push the start button. If you're handy with tools, you could buy the switch and fix it yourself. If you call an honest appliance repair service, that repair should cost less than $100.00. Check that first and if that's not the problem, let me know the complete model # and I'll let you know what else it could possibly be. Don't get rid of that dryer Glen! Whirlpool was still a good company 8 years ago. If you live in the Palmdale, Lancaster, Antelope Valley, California area, I know a good honest appliance repair company you can call!!

  2. That was great advice! You The Man!! The end of that lever to the switch is broke off. There was a little piece hanging down so I pushed in with my finger and press the start button and my Kenmore Dryer, (I mean Whirlpool Dryer) is working! Thank you so much! I don't think I'll be able to stand here and hold the switch in for an entire drying cycle so I'll call you. I live in East Palmdale and I want to buy the part from you since you helped me. I'll give you a call sometime today during business hours. Thanks again Bob! Look forward to talking with you...

  3. I have been struggling with the same decision. However, I think my predicament is much worse than others. I have a commercial refrigerating unit in my restaurant, which stopped working last night. I am trying to decide whether I need to hire someone who specializes with refrigeration repair for commercial equipment or just buy a whole new unit. I really don't want to buy a new one because it would cost me a bundle. Can anyone provide me with some advice?

Of course, regular maintenance will go a long way in keeping your washer or refrigerator or what have you in good working order for the most part, but sometimes you just have to break down (no pun intended) and call appliance repair Ogden professionals, or wherever you live, to come and take a look. 15. I agree with you about the older appliances being built better. Another thing is that today appliances have too many bells and whistles. The more stuff they cram into your appliances, the more likely they are to break down. Make sure you call your local appliance repair technician and repair your old appliances, if he is good he should make it run like new and might even outlast these newer appliances.

The fridge was still in pretty good working condition too except of course the one little thing that needed to be fixed, but he saved a bunch of money. http://www.tomsrefrigeration.com.au/fridge-freezer

  87. Our oven just recently stopped working. We have had the same oven for 6 years now. I am trying to decide if we just give up and buy a brand new one or just get it fixed. We like the one we have now, but we don't want to spend all this money to get it fixed to have it break down in 2 years. This blog was extremely helpful and it had a lot of great points and ideas. http://www.allapplianceservice.biz/Services/

  88. I agree that any time an appliance is rusted out, it's time to replace it. My wife and I definitely don't have a ton of money to just replace it immediately without trying to get it repaired either. But I think that you make a really great point. A lot of the older appliances are built with such a higher quality, and can last a lot longer with a little TLC. http://www.promptappliance.com

  89. I appreciate the information on appliance repair! You are right when you mentioned that newer appliances aren't built to the same quality of the older ones. I have an older mixer and the thing is bullet proof. We have gone through multiple new mixers and kept coming back to our older one.

  93. I have a few appliances where I've been trying to debate over fixing them or replacing them. One is a really old toaster and one is our microwave. The toaster I think I might as well just replace because it falls into the "too old" category that you talked about. The microwave I'll just repair though, since it's fairly new.

  94. I think it is so important to always try to repair your appliances first. By doing this you can save a lot of money. Buying new appliance is really expensive. If your appliances have a problem that seems fixable there is no reason for you to get a new one. It is amazing how durable most appliances are even if they have their quirks.

  97. Our dishwasher has not been working properly and it has been very frustrating. It doesn't dry the dishes at all. We don't really want to buy a new dishwasher just yet, so we need to call someone and have them fix it. We have looked around, and there are many companies to choose from. We will have to call them and get some quotes.

My washing machine hasn't been working and am trying to decide if it should be repaired or replaced. My current washing machine has been a really good but it is older an has started having more problems. http://unitedappliancesinc.com

  106. Thanks for sharing this advice! I have been trying to figure out whether to replace or repair my washing machine since it broke last night. Right now, it sounds like it would be a better idea for me to have it repaired. It isn't that old, so I think that repairing it would be more cost effective. However, if it breaks again, I might just replace it. http://www.crownappliance.ca/en/in_home_appliance_repair.html

  107. You are right, new appliances just aren't built like the old ones. I have this great toaster oven that finally quit on me. It would be awesome if I could get it repaired because it is so much better than the new ones that are being sold in the department stores.

  118. We get asked this question by many customers,Most tend to choose repairs as long as there not to expensive, We specialize in oven repairs and have found there are many costs associated to buying new ovens and replacing the old unit. The cost of the oven itself , the installation of electrical or gas connection and trying to match the oven in the same potion, adding costs to cabinet works can out way the cost of repairs.

  132. You made some great points about why I should replace a broken appliance with a new one. I agree with your point about how important it is to replace old appliances. I've had my washing machine for almost twenty years, and it's been looking rather worn down for a while. It still works, but it's been breaking down pretty frequently lately. I'll keep in mind to go out and buy a new washing machine before it stops working altogether. Thanks for the tips!

  140. I like your tips about deciding whether repair your appliances or to get new ones. I would agree that if your appliances are starting to get really old, it is probably time to get new ones, that are more current and updated. Repairing your appliance is definitely a good option to saving money, if your appliance is already new.
